Art Beat: And the Beat goes on...!
By Nancy Hoover

The new school year is off to a great start, with all of our talented girls creating their imaginative and impressive super heroes (and villains!), soon to be seen in the Courtyard Gallery.
We began with a review of drawing the human body in proportion, studied "fashion forward" costume design and, finally, we worked on developing a persona for our amazing alter egos! As a whole, the girls' work is an amazing mixed-media comic book cover piece that includes paint, colored pencil, "gel" pen, marker, and glitter.

Our next project will include a study of Chinese calligraphy, Japanese Sumi-E painting, and Asian contemporary art. The Middle School will also begin their independent study work for portfolio submissions and entries into local and national competitions.
DON'T FORGET! Our favorite art supply store, Jerry's Artarama, gives 10 % of purchases to the GSA art account, so don't forget to mention GSA every time you buy.
Thank you for your support!
Famous Sculptor Visits GSA
By Sam and Skylar, Middle School students

Scott Sustek, a former teacher at GSA, now devoting his full time to sculpting in his studio in Wall, TX, visited the Middle School and 4th Grade on September 3rd. He has been commissioned to sculpt Laura Bush, the First Lady, for a bronze statue for the new Laura Bush Library here in Austin. He brought his clay, wax castings, and styrofoam parts that are the preview works for the life-size piece, to be unveiled sometime in April 2009. It was a great experience to see how bronzes are made.
Even when he taught at GSA, Mr. Sustek loved sculpting. About three years ago he sculpted a bronze for the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and was honored in a ceremony where our now-8th Graders' violin orchestra played. He misses GSA but he loves being a sculptor of famous people. He will come back on future visits to the bronze foundry near Austin to see us and keep us updated on the sculpture.
