8th Grade Retreat
By the 8th Grade class

On Friday the 29th of August, the eighth grade class of GSA went to the Shambhala Meditation Center, accompanied by Ms. Ramberg and Ms. Schmitt, for a purpose unbeknownst to us. As soon as we arrived, we were led in a meditation session by Joanne Trubitt. This exercise was to help us focus on being in the moment. We were then joined by Rachel Ladov of GENaustin, an empowerment organization for girls. With her we brainstormed about what leadership means to us. We then had a chance to collect our thoughts with some journal time. One of our favorite activities with Rachel was when we each drew the name of a classmate and shared her leadership strengths with the group. Then we planned a faux party to practice our newly discussed leadership and planning skills. Soon after that our advisor, Sra. Dinan, arrived and informed us of our real assignment: we are going to organize a year-long community service project for the entire school to participate in. We're still in the planning process, but we have some great ideas that we hope to share with you soon. We intend to lead the school in a meaningful and memorable project for the whole GSA community and beyond.
