Art Beat
By Nancy Hoover

This month has been full of our favorite art subjects: animals! All grades have studied the life and times of Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899, French), an early feminist and celebrated artist who was known for her realistic paintings of animals, especially horses. Kindergarten through Fifth Grade have created beautiful pastels of horses on silver paper, and sculpted animals in clay. We have had a successful kiln firing of these charming pieces and made tableaus to display our work. They have also painted a canvas with a character for a book illustration.

The Middle School reviewed the work of Georgia O'Keefe (1887-1986), a major figure in American art. Her powerful, transformative and organic paintings of bones inspired their amazing black and white drawings of a cow skull, on view in the Courtyard Gallery. They continue to work on their independent studies and there are many excellent pieces ready for portfolios and the upcoming competition. All classes will be working on honing their drawing techniques in the coming weeks.
SAVE THE DATE: The Dell Children's Hospital Miracle Market has been cancelled BUT we will still have an in-house sale of our hand-dyed silk, velvet, and wool scarves, hats, computer bags, purses and more, during the week of December 8-12, during lunch. This sale, which funds the Art Department, is handled by the Middle School and all grades participate in the creative process of tie dying and packaging. The results are always fabulous so we hope you will spread the word to friends and family!
