A Midsummer Night's Dream

The fifth grade worked diligently on our production of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare. First, we read and listened to the play. We had discussions about the meaning and reread many parts to understand it better. Then we each memorized different passages from a section that we read each day. When we were ready to start work on our performance, some of us had to audition for the part that we wanted. Abby played Hermia, Solana played Demetrius, Luiza played Puck, Maddie played Lysander, and Rayleigh played Helena. Once the play was cast we began to memorize our lines. During rehearsals we worked on blocking, getting into character, and mastering the language. We also had to make a background, costumes, and props. Ms. Grey and Ms. Ramberg helped during rehearsals.
Our first full performance was a dress rehearsal for the fourth grade. We felt nervous and excited. Some felt confidant, but others were worried they might forget their lines. Like many dress rehearsals, this one showed us what we still needed to work on. The next day, we were ready to perform for our parents. That performance went extremely well. Afterwards we felt proud of the hard work we had put in, and sad that the excitement was over. This was a wonderful experience for all of us and it showed us that we were capable of something we thought was beyond us.
