Art Beat
By Nancy Hoover

This has been our busiest art month ever—the Self Portrait Show and the AVEDA Floating Gallery combined to make GSA Art a formidable experience! We have also been studying the art of the Impressionists and "plein air" (outside) drawing, capturing springtime blooms and creating swirling landscapes of color in pastels and paint.
Our Middle School is putting the finishing touches on their wonderful 8" x 10" drawings, paintings, sculpture, mixed media and lithographs for the 3rd annual Jerry's Artarama Austin Middle School 8x10 Art Competition. The awards ceremony and pizza party will be at Jerry's from 1-4 pm on Saturday, May 2. All students, family, and friends are invited to share in the recognition of these young artists. Ten different public and private middle schools are expected to submit over 500 pieces of work. We are well represented with 50 entries that are beautiful, edgy, and impressive!
Tie dying is up next and this time it's for us to keep! Each girl should bring in a white, clean 100% cotton, silk, or rayon item (one only, unless it is a pair of socks!)—no polyester as it does not hold dyes. OR, there are a limited number of silk and velvet scarves to dye ($15 each) available from Mrs. Hoover on a first-come, first-served basis. All items need to be labeled with your daughter's name in permanent marker, placed in a Ziplock bag, and brought to the art room by May 4th. Thank you!
