Dr. Owen, Paleontologist
By Sierra, 5th Grade student

On Tuesday, October 20th Dr. Pamela Owen, a paleontologist with the Texas Natural Science Center at UT Austin, came to talk to the Fifth grade science class about fossils. She let us touch and hold the fossils while she gave us clues about what animal they might be from. There were many fossils including a porcupine, white-tailed deer, and a coyote.
Dr. Owen taught us all about the animals' features and parts of the skulls. We learned that the way teeth look tells us what an animal eats, and that the nose and ears are made of cartilage. At the very end of her presentation she showed us a bison and let us hold the cover that goes around the horn. She was really cool and we all really enjoyed her visit.
