Fourth Grade Reading Marathon
By Carina, 4th Grade student

On October 28, the 4th grade had a reading marathon! They were allowed to bring the following:a sleeping bag or blanket, and/or pillow or favorite stuffed toy, and were required to bring at least three books to read (two of which should be fiction) and one book to recommend.
When class started in the morning, the 4th grade class piled into the classroom, put their things away and Ms. Lee said, "We are making our campsites now." She then explained, "Our campsites are not going to be like real campsites. Ours are just going to be like little cozy places that we make out of the things we brought in, and I suggest that you put your books into a neat pile next to your campsite. What shall I count down from?" "40!" someone saidloudly, so the class was setting up their campsites while Ms. Lee counted down from 40, "32, 31, 30, 29..." until she reached 0, and everyone was ready. She paused, then said, "Ready, set, read!" After she said that, the air was silent except for the sound of turning pages.
After the reading marathon started, the whole day was focused on reading, except for snack, music, lunch, and lunch recess. Somewhere in the middle of the day, the class recommended their books toeach other! Each student made a presentation about the books. Then Ms. Schmitt came to share one of her favorite books, "The Hobbit," by J.R.R. Tolkien and Carina's mom did a special activity on "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. Just in time for Halloween!
