Veterans Day
I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know; the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve. —Albert Schweitzer
We held a new event this year – the Veterans Day celebration. Students brought in names, photos, branch, and dates of service of family members who are currently serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces (or the armed forces of a friendly country). They transferred this information onto small banners that we displayed in the Courtyard Gallery. During a noontime ceremony, Ms. Read and the lower school choir performed a song/drill routine arranged by Ms. Read, and many vets were on hand to be honored.

Veterans Day was established as a federal and state holiday in 1919—the date is significant in that November 11 is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. Major hostilities were ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. On Veterans Day we honor our veterans— those men and women who are currently serving or have served in our armed forces. Other countries have set aside similar days—in Britain, it is called Remembrance Day.
While we celebrate a specific type of service to country on Veterans Day, it is also important to remember that service can take many forms. At school, we serve by taking care of the classrooms and grounds, at home we perform chores to serve our families, and we periodically engage in bigger projects—such as the Livestrong Challenge, food drives, or UNICEF collections – to help people in the larger community. All of us need to look for ways to serve that are personally meaningful.
Thank you to fourth grade parent Robin Holt for designing the display and for assisting the kindergarten and first grade students with their banners and photos.
