Part-Time Middle School Math Teacher (5 hours/wk)

The Girls’ School of Austin is a private, independent K-8 school in the historic Tarrytown district of Austin. The School brings together a diverse student body with a strong emphasis on creativity, community building, collaboration, and problem solving. Classes in Spanish and the visual and performing arts enrich the strong academic program. Significant use is made of the artistic and natural resources in Austin and the surrounding area (not the least of which is an annual Gala featuring prominent female artists and politicians). The School has an unusually active and committed parent body.
The position:The part-time middle school math teacher is a member of a team of math teachers, each of whom teaches one section of mathematics. At The Girls’ School, all math classes are taught the first period of the day making it particularly easy to differentiate instruction. Students can be placed in the math level that best matches their achievement in math without disrupting their schedule for the remainder of the day. All of the math teachers collaborate in developing the GSA math program (and at GSA, almost every teacher is a math teacher!).
Job responsibilities:- Teach one middle school math class
- Assist in the on-going development of the math curriculum for the middle school
- Use a variety of techniques to engage all learners
- Participate actively and positively in faculty meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned by the head of school
- A bachelor’s degree in math or related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
- Experience with graphing calculators and math software such as Geometer’s Sketchpad, graphing utilities, and data-collection probes is a plus.
- Strong communication skills required (verbal, written)
- Experience in private schools preferred
- Other skills a plus (in our small school)
- Must be able to work as a member of a team.
- Direct experience with girls’ schools is a plus; an understanding of the benefits of a single-gender education is essential.
- Ability to work as a member of a highly collaborative faculty
- Ability to develop interdisciplinary projects is a plus.
