The metamorphosis of our wonderful and revealing self-portraits has begun! The portraits are being painted in acrylic, glazes and, in some cases collage. The canvases are the largest we have ever attempted at GSA and the girls have enjoyed creating their work on standing easels. Many thanks for all the wonderful photos sent in to assist in their composition — it made a difference.

Our 5th Annual Self Portrait Show will take place Saturday, April 19th, from 3-6 at Jerry’s Artarama. There will be pizza and refreshments provided by Jerry’s and everyone is invited.

The Austin Middle School Competition will also be on exhibit and the GSA Middle School will be well represented. Please mark your calendars!

The 7th and 8th graders benefited from the art expertise of local painter, Jodie Copelin, as she visited us as a guest speaker last week. She shared her ideas on portraiture and gave advice and another point of view to our students. They also appreciated the beautiful oil painting she brought of her work.

During my trip to Paris over Spring Break, I was thrilled to see, in person, the icons of art that have defined my way of teaching and interpreting art. Our next project will definitely reflect that experience!
