Art Beat
By Nancy Hoover
We have started the New Year with the exploration of clay and our imagination. The kiln is now loaded with platters, bowls, winged hearts, manatees, strawberries, starfish, birds, horses, bats, butterflies, ferrets and other things too numerous to mention!
As a prelude to our self portraits, we have also begun our study of portrait artists, beginning with Modigliani (Italy, 1884 -1920), whose techniques included elongated faces and irregular eyes, influenced by his fascination with primitive masks. Many thanks to the Learmonth and Lazarus families for sharing some of their spectacular mask collection with us. Enjoy our exhibit of marvelous “Modiglianified” GSA girls, now showing in the Courtyard Gallery.
The following weeks will bring studies of the inspiring women portraitists throughout history and of course, Frida Kahlo! The new date for our Self Portrait Show and Middle School Competition is Saturday, April 19th, 4 pm , at Jerry’s Artarama. Please mark your calendars for this amazing event!
