New Head of School At The Girls' School of Austin

The Girls' School of Austin is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa Schmitt as the new Head of School beginning with the 2007-08 academic year. Ms. Schmitt arrives in Austin on July 1 from the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, an all-girl school founded in 1814, where she has served as Dean of Curriculum and Programs.
“Those of you who have had the opportunity to meet Lisa during her two visits to Austin and GSA can attest to her intellect, her drive and her wonderful sense of humor and curiosity,” said Don Vail, GSA Board Chairman. “She is a leader and an accomplished educator,” he said.
Lisa's career in education began over twenty years ago. She has earned a B.S. in Physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic University and an M.A.T. in Science Education from Boston University. A particular interest of hers has been inter-disciplinary programs. Her experience in administration includes positions at the Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts and Sonoma Academy in California.
Lisa Schmitt says of the Girl's School of Austin, "I was impressed by the strong sense of community, the kindness and enthusiasm of the students, and the dedicated faculty." Lisa is also an avid outdoorswoman and has hiked, canoed, biked or climbed on both coasts, the boundary waters of Minnesota, and the artic tundra.
Lisa was recommended to the GSA Board of Trustees by the Head of School Search Committee, a volunteer group of parents, teachers and board members who have spent countless hours over the past few months looking for just the right person to become our new Head. Congratulations to the entire committee.
Lisa's first day as Head of School will be July 1, though she will be visiting us again in the spring. Dr. Rita Sherbenou will assist with the transition. “I'd like to express an early note of thanks to Rita and her amazing service to the GSA over the past year,” said Don. “Her professionalism, level-headed judgment, and care for our girls has been wonderful to see. She is a special person and our school has gained a great deal by her presence with us,” he continued.
